The decentralized finance (DeFi) sector is abuzz as World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a protocol with direct backing from the Trump enterprise, announces a sweeping buyback and burn initiative for its flagship WLFI token. The news sent WLFI rallying over 6% in the past 24 hours and amplifies a week-long surge of more than 13%, with prices now hovering at $0.236.
The move, formally sanctioned by a near-unanimous governance vote (99.84% approval), will see all protocol-owned liquidity (POL) fees channeled into market purchases of WLFI, followed by permanent token burns. The result: a continually shrinking token supply aimed at bolstering value for remaining holders. This approach sets World Liberty Financial apart in the DeFi space, signaling a robust alignment with tokenomics-driven demand creation.
World Liberty Financial, whose reach spans Ethereum, Solana, and Binance’s BNB Chain, considered alternate strategies for its liquidity fees—including treasury operational support and partial burns—but ultimately chose to dedicate 100% of earned fees to burning. “Community preference” was the decisive factor, reflecting investor appetite for aggressive supply reduction.
Since its debut in early September, WLFI has gained significant traction. Allowlisted buyers saw gains of over 1,700% on launch day, with prices peaking above $0.33 before stabilizing. Initially launched as a governance token, WLFI’s shift to open trading followed another community-backed proposal, fueling broader participation and liquidity.
The Trump-affiliated project has notably swelled the family’s wealth, with holdings at one point reaching heights of $6 billion, though the 22.5 billion WLFI tokens currently command just over $5 billion—demonstrating the scale of support and market impact behind the protocol.
In parallel, World Liberty Financial has also rolled out USD1, its own dollar-backed stablecoin, now listed on Coinbase and tradable across the Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, and Tron networks. These developments reinforce the protocol’s position at the intersection of DeFi innovation, strategic tokenomics, and high-profile backing.
As the DeFi landscape matures, World Liberty Financial’s buyback and burn agenda underscores how governance-driven decisions and strong protocol incentives can rewrite the playbook for token value creation and ecosystem loyalty
